He was a big part of our family. He was there for so many happy times and celebrations, birthdays, Christmas Eves, and even family reunions,- you name it. He was an instant favorite of my aunts (I’m talking about ladies in their 70’s and 80’s here) and the first time they met him they told Rachel that if she didn’t marry him, one of them would. I think he really enjoyed going to all these events, especially when there was a lot of food involved. He had a very healthy appetite! Whenever we planned any family dinner or get together, the menu list always started off with certain dishes because they were “Lucas’ favorites.”

I remember one beautiful fall afternoon sitting on the deck that Lucas built around that gigantic tree at those horrible “cottages” in Auburn watching the game on the television set that he dragged out connected to miles of cable and wires – but it worked! I think some of the people there even had tickets for the game, but it was too beautiful a spot to leave. That was a perfect day spent with wonderful people.

I remember how amazingly sweet, funny and thoughtful Lucas was. When Rachel’s grandmother was in the hospital a few years ago, Lucas came by to visit her. He had recently “adopted” Foxy and when I found out he had left her in the car, I panicked because this was a very hot day in the middle of summer. But he assured me that she was fine — he had left the engine running with the air conditioning on. So picture Foxy, sitting all alone in a locked car in the parking lot at Jackson Hospital with the engine running, but cool as a cucumber. What dog days?

Until we see you again, go with God’s Grace, sweet boy.

Flora Durden

Anyone who ever met Lucas liked him immediately – and then loved him forever.
