40 Bucks

Posted in Memories at 11:43 pm by Jacob Kirkland

Anyone that knew Lucas knew he loved old Pops very much (Judi’s father). Lucas would go visit old Pops alot. One thing that was so funny was he would give Lucas $40 everytime he came to visit him. In Auburn, Lucas would tell us that he was going to Millbrook and after awhile we would kid him about going to get his 40 bucks. If Lucas had not seen Pops in 2 months he would give him $40, and if he saw him Monday and then again the next Monday it would still be $40 for each visit. No matter what, it was $40.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Pops very well the past couple years. I will always remember one time before I knew him at all, Lucas and I went to go see him. Well I obviously was awaiting for this $40 to happen after we had visited with him for awhile. It was so funny because as we were leaving Pops politely asked me to go to the car. This was when he gave Lucas the $40. Lucas came out to the car with a big grin and told me not to have my feelings hurt. It was so funny because Pops was being so sly about it. Of course it was great incentive to get $40 each time you visit your Grand dad but Lucas and Pops had a very special friendship.

Right after you moved into Millbrook with Lucas Pops and I came down for one of our weekly get the mail runs andd you were at home by yourself> Pops and Icame in and went to the bathroom and left rather quickly… not fault of yours Pops never wanted to stay long he just wanted to ride around mostly.. anyway… He said “who’s that?” I said it was Jacob Lucas’s friend and he said “Yeah, I think I’ve met him before.” I explained that you were going to live with Lucas and was expecting to get some Pops gruffness but instead I got. “Oh good, I’m glad he has someone with him it get lonesome to be by yourself ….you know.”

I remember that day. I thought I heard him and then he wasnt there.. I remember walking outside and he was already in the car and he gave me a big wave.

I also remember when Lucas and I came to Birmingham so I could get some career advice from Jerry. Pops was living with you all and Tarlie was in town visiting. I remember we all watched the Red Sox game on the big HD TV. Pops was cracking us up with all of his comments. Tarlie, Lucas, and I told Pops we were going to Courtyard 280 (one of Lucas’s favorite places in Bham) and he ended up giving Tarlie a $100. Drinks were all on Tarlie. That was the night Lucas was one of the lone supporters of the band and eventually had everyone in the bar dancing.

That same trip Jerry took Lucas and I to one of the nicest restaurants in Bham. I think it was called the Club. We were all dressed up and had a great time. Jerry gave us a little tour of the place.

Rachel – what about the USA shirts with huge flags on them AND Flag pens that had to go on the shirts that Pops would make all of wear when we went to his house? 🙂

Those shirts were hilarious! Lucas wore his all the time. When we both wore them to visit Pops we’d look like a cheesy tourist couple. I think I still have the shirt and the pin somewhere. I wonder if he bought them at Target. I remember he always wanted to go to Target when he came to Birmingham, and he would ride around on that electric shopping cart. He would give whoever went with him money to spend. There was that one trip when everyone was in town and we all went with him. We took like 3 or 4 cars. I think I ended up buying a bunch of toys for Seph.
