Having lived in the Sooner State for the past several years, I did not get the chance to hang out with Lucas on a consistent basis, as many of you have. My heart goes out to all of you who lived, worked and played with Lucas on a daily basis. These thoughts are what I will remember about Lucas. They are simple, yet meaningful to me. You always knew where you stood with Lucas. He never changed. Whether you were with him in Montgomery, Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, or Auburn, it was no different than sitting next to him in Spanish class, terrorizing the weight hut during 7th period P.E. class, or the partaking of an always eventful evening on Everest Drive (for those that remember the pool table, swimming pool, and the “world channel”). He was quite possibly the friendliest person I have ever known. Somerville and I were discussing Lucas on the phone last night, as I am sure many of you were. One thing we quickly realized was how so many people knew, and hung out with Lucas. He had friends of all ages. Our parents even adored him. When it is all said and done, it should not be a surprise to anyone at just how many people can actually say, “I was friends with Lucas Harris.”

That Unique Style

One story comes to mind that I think back on sometimes at random moments even to this day. I never could figure out why he did it… no money was on the line or anything… I guess just to do it. It was in high school, and we were at lunch in the courtyard sitting on the brick wall in front of Mrs. Sells’ classroom (for those of you that went to STJ). It was a Monday on a sunny spring day and Lucas and I were sitting together eating. I looked over at him and noticed what he was wearing… an outfit (Yes, outfit) made out of sweatsuit material with blue, orange, and white horizontal stripes with “AUBURN” printed diagonally across the chest and the same material navy blue shorts. It looked like something that no one over the age of 7 should be allowed to wear. I started laughing and teased him about it. He gave the famous goofy “Lucas laugh” back to acknowledge I was right and then promptly asked me if I dared him to wear it the rest of the week. I obviously accepted as there was no loss for me if he didn’t. The next day, I howled when I saw him walking down the hall with it on again that morning. I thought he was kidding but he had actually shown back up in the same kiddie clothes the next day. True to his word, he wore it the whole week…. and save for some girls probably, I don’t think a single other soul noticed. It became some kind of funny, stupid, little story the two of us shared and laughed about for the rest of high school. I don’t know why that sticks out…. maybe just because it was so Lucas.

O-shit handles

i will never forget the first time i rode with lucas to his house. he took that right off of vaughn road next to the park and then started accelerating. i got a little (scratch that, A LOT) worried as we approached the bend in the road where we had to follow the road right before taking a left and then another left onto their street. instead of turning lucas continued accelerating straight ahead with muffled laughter and i grabbed the o-shit handles, getting ready for him to flip the brown truck, but instead he drives right through the yard between two houses, off the curb on the other side, and right up into his driveway.

One story of Lucas I remember was when he moved in with us. Hal and I were helping Lucas put this two mattresses, not bed, but two mattresses on the floor and Lucas said it was kinda hot in there. He went over to the window unit in his room but it wouldn’t come on for what ever reason. Lucas felt hitting the machine repeatedly should get things working. Low and behold after the 23 or 24 hit the window unit worked itself free and fell from the second floor to explode in many pieces. I was at the door and Lucas turned and looked at me wearing a t-shirt that was two sizes too small inside out and a pair of brown polyester pants with that classic look only Lucas could make with his mouth wide open and his eyes as big as baseballs. This was immediately followed by the laugh that was unique only to Lucas HEEE HEEEHUGHH.

Yard Football

Some of my fondest memories of Lucas were when he was probably 5-7 years old…I was about 12-14… My friend across the street in Millbrook (Kris Moore) and I would play with Lucas all the time in our yard…the rules were 1. we’d throw him the football like it was a kickoff and 2. we had to stay on our knees and he had to try and get by us while staying “inbounds” (between the sidewalk and some ditch or if it was the winter or nightime we’d be in the playroom)…He LOVED this game…it didn’t matter how hard he got hit he would get up and keep playing if it was particularly painful he wouldn’t be laughing but he’d never cry or scream for fear that we’d have to stop playing or someone else would make us stop…he’d usually laugh…Kris would usually add in some color commentary as if it were a real game…”and Bo Jackson is fielding the kick”…that is when we might let him score…when we were gonna hit him harder it would be like “Gene Jelks unwisely picks up the ball”…then we’d crush him but he’d want to go again and again anyway

It was mostly non-stop smiles and laughing until dinner time when we were doing this.

After we moved to Montgomery, Kris was always interested in how Lucas did in football, he was pretty proud of him when I talked to him a few years later “I knew he was gonna be a player”

Housesitting

Posted in Memories at 3:20 pm by Jacob Kirkland

This past year I “housesitted” or I guess you can call it babysitting. I housesitted for Marshall Long when his mom went out of town. Marshall is a Senior at St. James this year. Anyways, Lucas would always hang out with me over there. He was everybody’s friend there. He would always beg me to let him stay there instead of me when Ms. Long would call. I always remember how I would go to bed, but Lucas would stay up till 4 in the morning with these kids just hanging out. I always remember the night Lucas decided to start tackling these kids. They woke me up because they were all laughing so hard. Lucas, of course, laughing the loudest. Anyways, what got them so stirred up was Lucas tackled Brad Campbell so hard in Marshall’s backyard that Brad didnt move for like 10 minutes.. It was all they could talk about the next morning. There are many memories I have of Lucas and those kids all hanging out and seeing how they all looked up to him. He was always so kind to them. If Lucas wasnt with me they would be upset and call him to come over. Just another great example of how great a person Lucas was to everyone no matter how old you were.

About Lucas

Anyone who ever met Lucas liked him immediately – and then loved him forever. He was a big part of our family. He was there for so many happy times and celebrations, birthdays, Christmas Eves, and even family reunions,- you name it. He was an instant favorite of my aunts (I’m talking about ladies in their 70’s and 80’s here) and the first time they met him they told Rachel that if she didn’t marry him, one of them would. I think he really enjoyed going to all these events, especially when there was a lot of food involved. He had a very healthy appetite! Whenever we planned any family dinner or get together, the menu list always started off with certain dishes because they were “Lucas’ favorites.”

I remember one beautiful fall afternoon sitting on the deck that Lucas built around that gigantic tree at those horrible “cottages” in Auburn watching the game on the television set that he dragged out connected to miles of cable and wires – but it worked! I think some of the people there even had tickets for the game, but it was too beautiful a spot to leave. That was a perfect day spent with wonderful people.

I remember how amazingly sweet, funny and thoughtful Lucas was. When Rachel’s grandmother was in the hospital a few years ago, Lucas came by to visit her. He had recently “adopted” Foxy and when I found out he had left her in the car, I panicked because this was a very hot day in the middle of summer. But he assured me that she was fine — he had left the engine running with the air conditioning on. So picture Foxy, sitting all alone in a locked car in the parking lot at Jackson Hospital with the engine running, but cool as a cucumber. What dog days?

Until we see you again, go with God’s Grace, sweet boy.
